Paul Nicholls was born on 12 April 1979 in Bolton, Greater Manchester, to Paul Greenhalgh and Julie Greenhalgh.
His father worked as a roofer while his mother was a psychiatric nurse. He grew up with his sister, Kelly Greenhalgh, and developed an interest in performing while attending Church Road Primary School in Bolton.
Nicholls attended Smithhills Dean High School and subsequently received theatrical training at the Sylvia Young Theatre School.
