During his youth he relocated first to Miami, Florida, and then ultimately to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he would settle for many years. In high school he played football and served as captain of teams such as the Neil McNeil Maroons and the Cedarbrae Colts in Toronto.
After completing secondary schooling, he enrolled at the University of Toronto, where he joined the Varsity Blues football squad. To improve his athletic performance—especially hand and foot speed—he trained in Jeet Kune Do, a martial art style.
