Gregory Buck Kinnear is an American actor and former talk show host. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the movie As Good as It Gets (1997).

Kinnear has appeared in numerous popular films, such as Sabrina (1995), You’ve Got Mail (1998), Nurse Betty (2000), Someone Like You (2001), We Were Soldiers, Auto Focus (both 2002), Stuck on You (2003), Robots (2005), Little Miss Sunshine, Invincible (both 2006), Green Zone, The Last Song (both 2010), Heaven Is for Real (2014), and Misbehaviour (2020).

Early Life and Education

Gregory Buck Kinnear, now 61,  was born in Logansport, Indiana, on June 17, 1963, to Suzanne (formerly Buck), a homemaker, and Edward Kinnear, a career diplomat for the US State Department. He has two older brothers, James (born 1957) and Steven (born 1959), and comes from a Scotch-Irish background. 

Growing up as a “Foreign Service brat,” Kinnear frequently moved, living in places like Beirut and Athens. While at the American Community Schools in Athens, he started his career as a talk show host with his radio show School Daze With Greg Kinnear.

After returning to the United States for college, he graduated from the University of Arizona in 1985 with a degree in broadcast journalism. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

Personal Life

Greg Kinnear‘s personal life significantly turned when he met Helen Labdon. Their encounter became a deep connection, leading to a beautiful union in 1999.

The couple’s journey together has been blessed by love, companionship, and the joy of parenthood. Blessed with two daughters, Lily Kathryn and Audrey Mae, Kinnear finds fulfillment as a devoted husband and father. 

Career

Kinnear hosted a short-lived game show called College Mad House, a spinoff of the children’s show Fun House. He went on to create, co-executive produce, and host Best of the Worst from 1991 to 1992.

In 1991, Kinnear became the original host of Talk Soup, which he continued until 1995 when he left to host the NBC late-night talk show Later with Greg Kinnear (1994).

Following his debut in the film Blankman, Kinnear landed the role of David Larrabee in Sydney Pollack’s 1995 remake of Billy Wilder’s classic Sabrina.

He also starred in the lead role in the 1996 comedy Dear God. In 1997, he appeared in James L. Brooks’ comedy-drama, As Good as It Gets. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. 

Kinnear also appeared in A Smile Like Yours with Lauren Holly, playing a couple trying to have a baby. He went on to star in several other films, including You’ve Got Mail, Mystery Men, Nurse Betty, Loser, The Gift, and Someone Like You, portraying a variety of characters from righteous to sleazy.

In 2002, Kinnear portrayed actor Bob Crane in the film Auto Focus, which depicted Crane’s life and murder. He also appeared in the comedy Stuck on You in 2003. In 2005, he starred in the black comedy The Matador and voiced a character in the animated film Robots.

Kinnear’s notable roles include co-starring with Steve Carell in Little Miss Sunshine in 2006 and with Mark Wahlberg in Invincible, based on the true story of a bartender who tries out for the Philadelphia Eagles football team.
