Per Fly was born on January 14, 1960, in Skive, Denmark. He was born to Karl Johan Plejdrup, a shopkeeper, and Gudrun Fly Plejdrup, who was also involved in the family business.

The Inheritance became one of Denmark’s most successful films of 2003 and won seven Robert Awards, including Best Film and Best Director. Manslaughter brought Fly the Nordic Council Film Prize, a Bodil Award, and another Robert Award for Best Director. In 2005, he also received the Crown Prince Couple’s Culture Prize for the trilogy.
He later directed the six-part television series Performances, several episodes of Follow the Money, and films including The Woman Who Dreamed of a Man, Monica Z, Backstabbing for Beginners, and Hammarskjöld. His recent work includes the 2025 television miniseries Secrets We Keep.
