Early Life and Education
Ralph Herforth was born Ralph Schwachmeier on January 15, 1960, in Herford, Germany, to parents Irma Schwachmeier, Mr. Schwachmeier. He has a twin brother named Jürgen.
After completing secondary school he discovered his interest in acting while assisting at a musical seminar in Salzburg in 1979. He trained at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna, graduating in 1982. He is of German origin, his religion is Christianity.
Career
Ralph Herforth began his professional career on stage, securing his first engagement at the Berliner Schillertheater in 1983.
At the suggestion of director Hans Neuenfels he adopted the stage name Herforth, inspired by his hometown. He continued with engagements at the Stadttheater Heilbronn, Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf, Schauspielhaus Wien.
His screen debut came in 1992 with the lead role in Lars Becker‘s Schattenboxer. He subsequently appeared in films including Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door (1997), Fatih Akin‘s Kurz und schmerzlos (1998), Der Eisbär.
From the late 1990s onward he focused heavily on television, accumulating more than 100 credits in series such as Tatort, SOKO Leipzig, Ein Fall für zwei.
His most enduring role is that of Kriminalkommissar Matthias Hamm in the ZDF series Unter anderen Umständen, which he has played since 2006.
International work includes the role of a gardener/killer in Æon Flux (2005) opposite Charlize Theron, Cannonball Taylor in the Wachowskis’ Speed Racer (2008). He has also appeared in The Zone of Interest (2023).
Parallel to acting he co-owns a real-estate agency in the Lindow area of Brandenburg.
