Roy Scheider entered the world on 10 November 1932 in Orange, New Jersey, to Roy Bernhard Scheider, an automobile mechanic, and Anna Crosson.

His breakthrough arrived with The French Connection (1971), in which he portrayed Detective Buddy Russo and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He followed it with The Seven-Ups and then landed the role that transformed his career.

Scheider became a major international star as Police Chief Martin Brody in Steven Spielberg‘s Jaws (1975), a role he reprised in Jaws 2.
