He was chosen for four all-star teams, two with the Atlanta Braves and two with the New York Yankees. The Atlanta Braves initially selected Patterson in the first round of the 1980 Major League Baseball secondary draft.

He began his career with the Class A Anderson Braves in 1980. He went on to win 13 consecutive games in 1981, setting a record for the most consecutive wins to start a season with the Braves. He was traded to the New York Yankees in 1982 and made it onto their Major League roster in 1983.
