Early Life and Education
Shavar Ross was born on March 4, 1971, in the Bronx, New York, to father Hank Ross, an actor, and mother referred to as Mrs. Ross. His parents separated when he was about seven years old; his mother then moved with him and his sister to Macon, Georgia, while his father pursued acting opportunities in Los Angeles.
He later attended Pasadena City College, earning an Associate of Arts degree. He is of African American origin, and his religion is Christianity.
Career
Shavar Ross was discovered by a children’s talent agent while visiting his father in California during a school holiday. He soon began appearing in commercials and landed his breakthrough recurring role as Dudley Johnson on Diff’rent Strokes in 1980, a part he won after auditioning against more than 250 other children.
He remained with the series until 1986, appearing in dozens of episodes alongside Gary Coleman. During the same period he provided the voice of Buckwheat in the animated Little Rascals series and took supporting roles in television films and series including Benson, Magnum, P.I., and The House of Dies Drear.
In 1985 he played Reggie “the Reckless” in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s he continued guest and recurring work on shows such as Growing Pains, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Family Matters (as Weasel). He also appeared in the feature film What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993).
After the mid-1990s he largely stepped away from on-camera acting, focusing instead on directing, writing, and producing. He wrote and directed the short films Soul to Take and A Taste of Us, followed by the feature comedy Lord Help Us (2007). He has also authored books drawing on his experiences in the industry and founded Tri-Seven Entertainment, an independent production and online retail company.
In later years Ross has combined entrepreneurial activities, spiritual teaching, and occasional media appearances while maintaining a lower public profile than during his childhood stardom. His career spans more than four decades and reflects a deliberate shift from child actor to multi-hyphenate creative and business professional.
