Early life and education
Soccer was born on May 16, 1988, in Connecticut. He was a Jack Russell Terrier and had a brother named Muta. In July 1988, when he was approximately two months old, he was adopted by dog trainer Jackie Martin Kaptan.
His name reportedly came from his distinctive markings and his fondness for playing with toy soccer balls. He lived and trained at Kaptan‘s ranch in Texas, where he developed the skills that eventually made him suitable for television work.
Career
Soccer began his professional entertainment career as an animal performer and appeared in commercials for companies including Nike, Mighty Dog and Chuck Wagon.
His defining opportunity arrived in 1995, when producers searched for a Jack Russell Terrier to portray Wishbone in the PBS children’s series Wishbone.
More than 100 dogs auditioned for the role, but Soccer was selected because of his particularly expressive personality and ability to perform on camera.
As Wishbone, Soccer became the central performer in the series, which ran from 1995 to 1997 and produced 50 episodes.
The character imagined himself as heroes from famous works of literature, including stories inspired by Shakespeare and classic novels.
Actor Larry Brantley provided Wishbone‘s voice, while Soccer performed the physical actions. Soccer also appeared in the television movie Wishbone’s Dog Days of the West in 1998.
Personal life
Soccer lived with his trainer, Jackie Martin Kaptan, at her ranch in Texas, where he was trained and cared for during his acting career. He was known for his expressive performances, intelligence and ability to perform specialized behaviors.
His stunt doubles included other trained dogs who handled activities Soccer could not perform himself. Soccer died from natural causes on June 26, 2001, at the age of 13, and was buried at Kaptan‘s ranch.
Soccer remains closely associated with Wishbone and is remembered as one of the most distinctive animal performers in children’s television. His portrayal helped make Wishbone a beloved character while the series encouraged children to explore classic literature.
A 2026 documentary, What’s the Story, Wishbone?, revisited the making of the series and highlighted Soccer‘s importance to its enduring legacy.
