Steve Evets entered the world on 26 July 1960 in Salford, Lancashire, into a working-class family. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Murphy, and he has a brother, Tom Murphy, who was a drummer with The Fall.
Evets left school without a clear career direction and joined the Merchant Navy after seeing a presentation about life at sea.
His formal education later took a different path when he enrolled on a foundation course at Abraham Moss Centre in Manchester, where drama sparked his interest in acting. He subsequently undertook further drama training and formed a street-theatre company with friends before working professionally. Steve Evets entered acting after leaving the Merchant Navy and working a series of jobs, including delivering industrial pipes and electrical work. He initially performed street theatre and later took small television roles in productions such as Casualty, Emmerdale, City Central and The Cops.
A serious pub attack in 1987 left him critically injured, but after recovering he continued pursuing acting. He adopted the name “Evets,” which is “Steve” written backwards, because another Steve Murphy was already registered with Equity.
His major breakthrough came with Summer (2008), followed by the starring role of Eric Bishop in Ken Loach‘s Looking for Eric (2009), which brought him international recognition and a European Film Award nomination.
He subsequently appeared in Robin Hood, Brighton Rock, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Anna Karenina, The Selfish Giant, Apostasy, Wuthering Heights, Rev., Death in Paradise, The Musketeers, Brassic and White Gold.
As a musician, he played bass with The Fall from 2000 to 2002 before forming Dr Freak’s Padded Cell.
