He attended Parkdale High School and later received a scholarship to study business administration and communications at the University of Maryland, though he did not complete the degree due to his boxing career. Sugar Ray Leonard began his professional path as an amateur boxer, winning a gold medal in the light-welterweight division at the 1976 Montreal Olympics after overcoming a hand injury.
