Early Life And Education

Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, widely known as Vijay, was born on June 22, 1974, in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India.

He is the son of renowned film director S. A. Chandrasekhar and playback singer Shoba Chandrasekhar. Vijay has a late sister, Vidhya Chandrasekhar, who passed away at the age of two.

He completed his early education at Fathima Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Balalok Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai. Vijay then pursued a Bachelor’s in Visual Communication from Loyola College, Chennai.

Belonging to Tamil ethnicity, Vijay was raised in a family with diverse religious backgrounds—his father is Christian, and his mother is Hindu. Vijay himself identifies as a Christian.

Career

Vijay began acting as a child artist in the Tamil film Vetri (1984). After appearing in several of his father’s films, he debuted as a lead actor in Naalaiya Theerpu (1992) at 18.

Over the next few years, he established himself in the industry with a string of successful films, including Poove Unakkaga (1996), Love Today (1997), Kadhalukku Mariyadhai (1997), Thullatha Manamum Thullum (1999), and Kushi (2000).

His performance in Kadhalukku Mariyadhai earned him the prestigious Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1998, marking a significant milestone in his early career.
