Early Life and Education
Amber Chia was born on 14 December 1981 in Teluk Intan, Perak, Malaysia, and is 45 years old. She grew up in a financially struggling family with her parents, Chia Hun Poy and Chua Moi Ku, and five siblings.
Her family later lived in Sekinchan, Selangor, before moving to Tawau in Sabah. From a Malaysian Chinese family of Teochew-Hokkien heritage, she was raised in Buddhist traditions.
Financial hardship shaped much of Chia’s childhood. Her father worked as a fisherman and struggled to support the large family, which resulted in Amber and two of her older siblings spending part of their childhood with foster families.
She began attending school after moving in with foster parents at eight and returned to live with her biological family at 12.
As a teenager, Amber worked extensively to help support her family. She helped her father sell fish at a local market in the early hours of the morning, attended school during the day, and worked as a cashier at night.
The demanding schedule eventually forced her to leave formal education at 15. At almost 17, she rejected an arranged marriage proposal involving her mother and moved to Kuala Lumpur with only RM300 in savings to seek employment and build an independent life.
Personal Life
Amber Chia previously dated business executive Adrian Wong. The couple held a wedding ceremony in Bali in March 2010 and later welcomed their son, Ashton Wong, in September of the same year.
Although they presented themselves as married, their union was not officially registered under Malaysian civil law.
Their relationship gradually ended, and in 2024 Amber confirmed she had been single for about two and a half years. This placed their separation around late 2021.
Despite ending their relationship, Chia and Wong have continued to co-parent their son. She has remained single since the separation and has not publicly confirmed another long-term relationship.
Career
Amber Chia began her professional modelling career at 17 after moving to Kuala Lumpur. She initially accepted smaller assignments before achieving her breakthrough in 2004.
That year, she won the Guess Watches Timeless Beauty International Model Search in Switzerland, becoming the first Asian female model to win the international competition.
Her victory led to international modelling opportunities and commercial campaigns. Throughout her career, she appeared on the covers of more than 200 magazines.
She served as a brand ambassador for numerous international and Malaysian companies, including L’Oréal, Sony, Mitsubishi, Vidal Sassoon, and Pensonic.
Chia expanded beyond modelling into entrepreneurship. In 2009, she established Amber Creations, a production and talent management company. The following year, she founded the Amber Chia Academy, which offers training in modelling, makeup, and fashion.
She has also worked as an actress and television personality, appearing in Malaysian and Chinese films and television productions and participating as a guest judge on Asia’s Next Top Model.
Her other ventures have included fashion collaborations and publishing. She has worked with local fashion brands and released books documenting her experiences in modelling and the entertainment industry.
