Audrey Wells was born on April 29, 1960, in San Francisco, California. She was born to Wolfgang Lederer, an Austrian-born psychiatrist, and Alexandra Botwin Lederer, a Romanian-born psychologist. Her parents had fled Europe during the Second World War. Wells was of Jewish ancestry, with both Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jewish heritage.

She grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and developed an interest in storytelling and creative work from an early age. Wells studied at the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned her bachelor’s degree, before continuing her education at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she obtained a master’s degree in fine arts.
