Audrey Wells was born on April 29, 1960, in San Francisco, California. She was born to Wolfgang Lederer, an Austrian-born psychiatrist, and Alexandra Botwin Lederer, a Romanian-born psychologist. Her parents had fled Europe during the Second World War. Wells was of Jewish ancestry, with both Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jewish heritage.
She grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and developed an interest in storytelling and creative work from an early age.
