Her mother, Kate Gare, managed the band and performed for ten years, from 1982 to 1992. They played at international music festivals, such as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and toured with famous comedians and musicians like Rik Mayall and Jonathan Richman.

They also collaborated with The Nansing Quartet, a six-piece band that included Sophie’s brother Adam and Lucky Oceans, a Grammy Award-winning pedal steel guitarist. The Jam Tarts released three albums: Jam Tarts (1985), True Stories (1987), and A Slice of Life (1990).

Sophie Gare also pursued an acting career, appearing in several films and television shows. In 1986, she starred in an Australian film, Pursuit of Happiness, as a 15-year-old who sings in a rock band and opposes American nuclear submarines harbouring in Australian waters.

In 1993, she had a small role in Stark, a British-Australian television miniseries based on a novel by her husband Ben Elton.

In 2017, she appeared in Three Summers, a comedy film directed by her husband and set at a fictional folk music festival in Western Australia.
