Chrystabell was born on April 20, 1978, in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up in a highly creative family. Her father, Arthur Darling Zucht III, was a dentist, hot-air-balloon pilot, entrepreneur and founder of Countryside Memorial Park, while her mother, Sunny Markham, is a professional singer.
After her parents separated, Sunny married composer, producer and engineer Mitch Markham, and the family operated a recording studio where Chrystabell made her first vocal recordings at age 11.

Career
Chrystabell began writing music in 1995 and launched her professional musical career as the lead singer of the Austin-based swing revival group 8½ Souvenirs. The band released Happy Feet and Twisted Desire before she moved into solo work.
Her career took a major turn after meeting filmmaker David Lynch in 1998.
Their artistic partnership produced Polish Poem, featured in Lynch’s Inland Empire, followed by the collaborative album This Train and the EP Somewhere in the Nowhere.
Lynch also cast her as FBI Special Agent Tammy Preston in Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017. Her solo albums include We Dissolve, Feels Like Love and Midnight Star, showcasing dream pop, post-punk, soul, disco and experimental influences.
In 2024, she reunited musically with Lynch for Cellophane Memories, serving as vocalist, engineer and mixer on the album. Chrystabell also serves as president and steward of Countryside Memorial Park, the natural burial cemetery founded by her father.
