Donna Marie Theresa Air was born on August 2, 1979, in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Her parents are Marie Air, a receptionist, and Trevor Air, a mechanical engineer. She is the eldest of three children, alongside Francesca and Alexander. She is White, and her religious background is Christian.

Donna Air began her entertainment career as a child performer, appearing on the BBC children’s drama Byker Grove from 1992. She played Charlie Charlton and remained part of the programme during its early 1990s run.
Her television work soon expanded into music when she formed Byker Groove! alongside fellow cast members, later continuing her pop career as part of Crush.
