Elena Alexeevna Yakovleva was born on 5 March 1961 in Novohrad-Volynskyi, Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, to Aleksei Nikolaevich Yakovlev, an army officer, and Valeria Pavlovna Yakovleva, a science researcher whose own grandmother was an actress.

Elena Yakovleva began her career while still a student, making her screen debut in 1983 as Lera opposite Innokentiy Smoktunovskiy in Dvoe pod odnim zontom: Aprelskaya skazka (1984). After graduating in 1984, she joined the prestigious Moscow Sovremennik Theatre, where she has remained a long-term actress.
In 1986 she also proposed a transfer to the Moscow Drama Theater named after M.N. Yermolova. Her early film recognition came with a role in Plumbum, or The Dangerous Game (1987).
Yakovleva shot to fame in 1989 with the leading role of Tatyana Zaitseva, a medical nurse turned prostitute, in Intergirl (Interdevochka), a film adaptation of Vladimir Kunin‘s book. She received numerous awards for the role and was named “Best Actress” of 1990 in the Soviet Union.
She demonstrated her range with roles in Encore, Once More Encore! (1992) and the popular TV series Kamenskaya (1999–2011), playing detective Anastasia Kamenskaya, which became her most acclaimed television work and turned into a six-year franchise. She also received a Nika Award in 1990 and 1993, and a TEFI Award in 2004.
Later in her career, Yakovleva continued to work prolifically across film and theatre. She played Irina in Flight Crew (2016) and became widely recognized for portraying Baba Yaga in The Last Warrior franchise (2017, 2021). More recent roles include Rimma in the blockbuster Cheburashka (2023) and reprising Baba Yaga in Finist. The First Warrior (2025).
In 2002 she was awarded People’s Artist of Russia, followed by the State Prize of the Russian Federation (2001/2000) and the Order of Honour (2006). She earned her second Golden Eagle Award in 2017, cementing her legacy as one of Russia’s most decorated and beloved actresses.
