Early life and education
Evgeniya Gromova was born on March 27, 1988, in Shatura, a town in Moscow Oblast, Russia. She was brought up by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gromov. She came from an ordinary family outside the entertainment industry.
Her father worked in the police force and later worked at a sports palace, while her mother worked in the city archives.
Her father is also a master of sports in Greco-Roman wrestling and has continued participating in veterans’ competitions. Gromova grew up in a family of three children.
Despite eventually becoming an actress, Gromova did not have a conventional theatrical childhood.
She has said that she did not participate in school amateur performances, attend creative clubs or initially dream of becoming an actress.
After finishing school, however, she unexpectedly decided to pursue theatre and moved to Saint Petersburg, where she entered the theatre faculty of the Baltic Institute of Foreign Languages and Intercultural Cooperation.
Her educational path was not straightforward. After studying in Saint Petersburg, she spent a year at the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute in Moscow before eventually entering the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS).
She studied in the actor-director group of Sergei Zhenovach and graduated in 2013 from his directing faculty workshop.
During her GITIS years, Gromova began appearing on stage. Her student performances included roles in productions based on works by Anton Chekhov, Alexander Ostrovsky, Friedrich Schiller, Andrei Platonov and William Faulkner.
Her performance as Anna Pavlovna Obroshenova in Ostrovsky’s Jokers earned her the Golden Leaf theatre award in 2013.
After graduation, she joined the company of Studio of Theatrical Art, where she performed in productions including The Master and Margarita, The Dead Man’s Notes, The Suicide, Moscow to the End of the Line and The Notebooks.
Career
Evgeniya Gromova began appearing on screen while developing her theatre career. One of her earliest credits was the television anthology 9 May. Personal Attitude, released in 2009.
She later appeared in the television series Life and Fate (2012). Her professional screen career became more substantial during the middle of the 2010s.
In 2016, she played Rita in Yulia Belaya’s drama Urban Birds (Gorodskie ptichki). The film became an important step in her transition from primarily theatrical work to screen acting.
Her performance also earned recognition at the Movement Film Festival, where she received a Best Actress award according to industry film records.
She followed this by appearing in the television series Second Sight and taking the leading role of Maya in the 2017 miniseries Diamond Endgame. These roles helped establish her as a versatile Russian screen actress.
Gromova‘s major breakthrough arrived in 2019 when she starred as Lena in Nigina Sayfullaeva‘s psychological drama Fidelity (Vernost).
The film follows a married woman who becomes convinced that her husband is being unfaithful and subsequently enters an affair of her own.
Gromova‘s performance was central to the film’s emotional and psychological impact.
Her performance in Fidelity earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the National Critics and Film Press Award, commonly known as the White Elephant, in the 2019 awards cycle. She was nominated alongside actresses including Samal Yeslyamova and Viktoriya Miroshnichenko.
In 2020, Gromova appeared in Fyodor Bondarchuk‘s psychological drama series Psych, playing Marina.
The series starred Konstantin Bogomolov and explored the life of a successful Moscow psychotherapist whose own emotional problems become increasingly difficult to conceal.
Alongside acting, Gromova has increasingly explored writing and directing. She is credited as a screenwriter on several projects and has also worked behind the camera.
Her experience at GITIS, where she studied directing as part of Sergei Zhenovach‘s workshop, gave her a foundation for this broader creative career.
Her career has consequently developed across several areas of the performing arts: she is an accomplished theatre actress, an established film and television performer and an increasingly active screenwriter and filmmaker.
