Gemma Christina Arterton is an actress and producer from England. She began her career on stage in Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost at the Globe Theatre in 2007 and made her breakthrough debut in the film St Trinian’s (2007).

Early Life and Education

Gemma Christina Arterton, now 38 years old, was born on February 2, 1986, in Gravesend, Kent, England. She grew up alongside her younger sister, Hannah Arterton. Arterton’s parents, Barry Arterton and Sally-Anne Heap, provided a nurturing environment for their daughters.

Gemma was born with a condition called polydactyly, which resulted in extra fingers that were surgically removed shortly after her birth. Her mother, Sally-Anne Heap, runs a cleaning business, and her father, Barry J. Arterton, is a welder.

Regarding her educational background, she attended Gravesend Grammar School for Girls and made her amateur stage debut in a production of Alan Ayckbourn’s The Boy Who Fell into a Book, winning the best actress prize in a local festival competition.

At 16, she left school to study acting at the Miskin Theatre at North Kent College in Dartford and later continued her studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 2008.

Personal Life

Arterton crossed paths with production assistant John Nolan while working on Quantum of Solace, and they resided together in London. In 2008, she was involved with Spanish stuntman Eduardo Muñoz, whom she met on the set of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

They shared a flat in London but went their separate ways after six months. Arterton tied the knot with Stefano Catelli in 2010, but they parted ways in 2013, and their divorce was finalized in August 2015.

Arterton admitted to not fully believing in marriage vows and expressed uncertainty about walking down the aisle again.

She also mentioned her desire to achieve success in her acting career before considering having children. In 2019, she exchanged vows with actor Rory Keenan, and they welcomed their first child, a son, in December 2022.


Arterton’s first professional role was in Stephen Poliakoff’s Capturing Mary while she was still studying at drama school.

In the same year, she played the lead role in the BBC adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Also in 2008, she played Elizabeth Bennet in the ITV serial, Lost in Austen.

Her most controversial role to date was in the 2009 film The Disappearance of Alice Creed, in which her character is kidnapped and abused in several graphic nude scenes.

Arterton was the face of Avon’s Bond Girl 007 fragrance when it was launched in October 2008. In 2010, she made her West End debut in the UK premiere of The Little Dog Laughed.

She was originally set to star in a new adaptation of Wuthering Heights as Catherine Earnshaw; however, she later left the project. Arterton appeared in pivotal roles in the 2010 films Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
