Gemma Jones was born on December 4, 1942, in Marylebone, London, as the daughter of Welsh-born actor Griffith Jones, actress Irene Isaac. She grew up in a theatrical family alongside her younger brother, Nicholas Jones, who also became an actor.
Jones attended the Francis Holland School in London before pursuing professional acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where she studied from 1960 to 1962, won the academy’s gold medal.
