Early Life and Education
Gülse Birsel was born on March 11, 1971, in Istanbul, Turkey, as the third child of Gültekin Şener, a lawyer, and Semiha Şener, a housewife.
She has an older brother, Bozkurt, a fifteen-year senior ophthalmologist and former national volleyball player, and an older sister, Dilek, thirteen years her senior. She completed her secondary education at Beyoğlu Anadolu High School.
Although she had dreamed of acting since childhood, she honored her family’s wishes and enrolled at Boğaziçi University, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics in 1994.
She then attended Columbia University in New York, completing a Master of Fine Arts in Film from the School of the Arts in 1996. She is of Turkish heritage, and her religion is Islam.
Career
Gülse Birsel began her professional life as a journalist, starting at Aktüel magazine during her university years.
After returning to Turkey from Columbia University in 1996, she worked at ATV writing foreign news bulletins before being appointed editor-in-chief of Esquire Turkey magazine a year later.
From December 1997 to 2003, she served as editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar Turkey, and she also worked as general coordinator for FHM, Gezi, Harper’s Bazaar, and House Beautiful.
In March 2002, she made her television debut with the show g.a.g. on ATV, which she both wrote and presented, quickly establishing herself as a distinctive comedic voice.
Her breakthrough came in February 2004 when she created, wrote, and starred in the sitcom Avrupa Yakası on ATV, sharing the lead with Gazanfer Özcan, Hümeyra, and Ata Demirer.
The series ran until June 2009 and became one of the most successful and beloved sitcoms in Turkish television history.
She made her cinematic debut in 2005 with Hırsız Var! and appeared in 7 Kocalı Hürmüz in 2009.
In 2012, she launched her second major sitcom, Yalan Dünya, on Kanal D, which earned her the Altın Kelebek Award for Best Screenwriter in 2012. She also won the same award in 2005 for her work on Avrupa Yakası.
Birsel continued to expand her creative portfolio with the film Aile Arasında (2017), which she wrote and starred in, followed by the sitcom Jet Sosyete (2018–2020) and the film Yılbaşı Gecesi (2022).
As a columnist, she wrote for Sabah from 2001 to 2012 and for Hürriyet until her resignation in 2019.
She has published six books, including Gayet Ciddiyim (2003), Hâlâ Ciddiyim (2004), Velev ki Ciddiyim (2009), and Memleketi Ben Kurtaracağım (2015).
