Early life and education

Hatty Jones was born on July 21, 1988, in London, England, to Chris Jones, a lawyer, and Sue Jones, who was not an actress and cared for the family.

She grew up alongside two brothers. Her father told CBS in 1998 that he had no acting background, while one of Hatty‘s brothers was interested in football and another enjoyed putting on performances with her.

Jones developed an interest in performing while she was still a child. She attended drama classes and was encouraged by her teacher to audition for Madeline.

At the time, she had only limited performance experience, including a school play and about a year at a drama school.

Her audition for Madeline changed the direction of her childhood. Producers searched among thousands of girls before selecting Jones, whose height, appearance and personality suited their interpretation of the literary character.

She was only nine when she made the film, although she turned ten during the period surrounding its release.

After her early acting career, Jones continued her education and eventually graduated from the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London in July 2010.

At Mountview, she continued developing her theatrical skills and performed in productions including Romeo and Juliet and The Seagull.

Career

Hatty Jones made her feature-film debut in Madeline (1998), playing the spirited Parisian schoolgirl created by Ludwig Bemelmans.

The film starred Frances McDormand as Miss Clavel and gave Jones her first major professional acting opportunity. Her performance made her a recognizable child performer internationally.

Following Madeline, Jones returned to school and largely stayed away from professional acting while growing up. She later auditioned for the role of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series.

She and Emma Watson were among the final candidates, but the producers ultimately selected Watson for the role.

Jones gradually returned to screen acting as an adult. She appeared as Libby Langsdale in Holby City in 2012 and as Edie Watkins in Doctors in 2013. She subsequently appeared in the television film Wannabes in 2014.

Her work expanded beyond acting as she became increasingly interested in writing, directing and producing.

In 2013, she co-founded HeavyWait Productions alongside filmmaker Amani Zardoe. The company was established as a creative platform focused particularly on female-driven stories.

Jones and Zardoe also developed the web series Offstage, which followed two young actors attempting to establish themselves in the entertainment industry.

Jones worked as a performer and filmmaker on the project, allowing her to explore the experiences of young actors from a more personal perspective.

In 2015, Jones starred in and worked behind the camera on the short film The Silent Gangsters.

She received credits as an actress, writer, director and producer, marking an important step in her transition from child performer to a multidisciplinary filmmaker.

The film won Best Score in a Short at the Southampton International Film Festival.

She later returned to theatre, including the semi-autobiographical production That Girl. The play explored aspects of her experiences as a child actor and the difficulties associated with growing up after achieving fame at a young age.

Her later work has therefore combined acting, writing, directing and producing rather than focusing solely on screen performance.
