Johanna San Miguel Dammert was born on 14 November 1967 in the upscale Miraflores district of Lima, Peru, to a prominent family. Her father, José San Miguel Mejía, was a well-known lawyer and politician, and her mother, Silvia María Dammert Herrera, came from one of Peru’s traditional families.

She studied at the exclusive all-girls school Colegio Villa María and later trained in acting at Club de Teatro de Lima and with renowned directors Roberto Ángeles and Alberto Ísola.
