Early Life and Education
Katya Virshilas was born on September 10, 1983, in Lithuania, into a Jewish family. Her family moved to Israel when she was young, where she began taking dance classes, and later immigrated to Vancouver, Canada, when she was around 12 or 13. Her aunt was a ballerina and helped inspire her early interest in dance.
Virshilas became seriously involved in ballroom and Latin dancing after moving to Vancouver. Despite beginning ballroom training at an age her first teacher considered late, she progressed rapidly and became a four-time Vancouver British Columbia Dancesport Champion between 1998 and 2002.
She later attended college in Toronto while continuing her competitive dance career.
Career
Virshilas established herself as a competitive ballroom dancer before moving into entertainment. She won the Canadian Latin Dance Championship in 2001 and represented Canada at international competitions.
Her dancing career eventually led to opportunities in film, including training and performing alongside Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere during Shall We Dance? (2004). She later appeared in Take the Lead (2006) opposite Antonio Banderas and John Tucker Must Die (2006).
She became widely recognized in Britain after joining Strictly Come Dancing as a professional dancer. She competed in series 7 with cricketer Phil Tufnell, series 8 with rugby player Gavin Henson, and series 9 with Dan Lobb. She also choreographed routines for the first series of So You Think You Can Dance in the UK.
After her television career, Virshilas moved with her family to Hong Kong and co-founded BallroomBees, a children’s dance program inspired by her sons. The program combines ballroom dance, movement, music, and play and has become a major part of her professional work.
