Laura Leggett Linney, now at the age of 60, was born on February 5, 1964, in New York City, New York. She was raised in a family deeply rooted in the arts, with her father, Romulus Linney, being a distinguished playwright, and her mother, Ann Leggett, a nurse.

Linney spent summers with her father in New Hampshire and developed a passion for the stage, starting at the age of eleven with the local theatre group. Her paternal great-great-grandfather was Republican U.S. Congressman Romulus Zachariah Linney. She has a half-sister named Susan from her father’s second marriage.

Linney graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon School in 1982 and later attended Northwestern University before transferring to Brown University.
