Madeleine Martin was born on April 15, 1993, in Manhattan, New York City, where she grew up alongside her two brothers. Her mother, Margaret Martin, is Canadian, and her father is an American philosophy professor; as a result, Martin holds dual citizenship in the United States and Canada.

During her childhood, her parents homeschooled her while she studied at the School of American Ballet, laying the foundation for her early-stage work. At age seven, Martin made her professional stage debut by appearing in the Broadway National Tour of The Sound of Music alongside Richard Chamberlain and two years later portrayed young Cosette in the Broadway National Tour of Les Misérables.

At age ten, she earned acclaim on Broadway as the title character in A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, becoming the youngest presenter in history at the 2003 Tony Awards.
