Her father, David Soo, is a Chinese American physician, and her mother, Sheila Chapman, of English, Scottish, and Irish descent, worked in arts administration.

Soo attended Libertyville High School from 2004 to 2008, where she participated in theater productions, and then earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Juilliard School’s Drama Division, graduating in 2012.
