Early life and education
Rei Dan was born on August 4, 1971, in Shinonsen, Mikata, Hyogo, Japan. Her birth name is Mayumi Yamazaki.
She grew up in what is now Shinonsen, in the northern part of Hyogo Prefecture, and became interested in performance after receiving praise for participating in a kindergarten stage presentation. She later developed an ambition to enter the Takarazuka system.
Rei Dan is Japanese and has one younger sister. She experienced family changes during childhood, including her parents’ separation and her mother’s subsequent remarriage.
Her early years in the rural Hyogo region became the foundation for a career that later placed her on major Japanese theatrical and screen stages.

After graduating, she entered the Takarazuka Music School in 1990 and became a member of its 78th class. She graduated in 1992 and joined the Takarazuka Revue, making her stage debut in the Snow Troupe production Kono Koi wa Kumo no Hate Made.
Career
Rei Dan entered the Takarazuka Revue in 1992 and initially joined the Moon Troupe. She transferred to the Snow Troupe in 1997, returned to Moon Troupe in 1998, and received her first heroine opportunity in Asajigajuku.
In 1999, she became Moon Troupe’s top musumeyaku, performing opposite Tsubasa Makoto. She moved to the Revue’s specialist Senka division in 2001 before becoming Star Troupe’s top musumeyaku in 2003, opposite Wataru Kozuki. She retired from Takarazuka in 2005.
Her screen career began in 2006, when she played Kayo Mimura in Yoji Yamada’s Love and Honor. The performance brought her the Japan Academy Prize for Best Newcomer and an Outstanding Performance Award for Best Actress, alongside several other newcomer honors.
She later appeared in Kabei: Our Mother, The Eighth Day, Taira no Kiyomori, Vivant, Mountain Doctor, and numerous other productions.
Rei Dan has also expanded her work into voice acting and music. She voiced Queen Amaya in the Japanese version of Disney’s Wish and continues to perform as a singer.
Her recent activities include 2025’s Special Live “R”, the 2025 stage production Dai Gyakuten! Sengoku Busho Homare, and television work in 2026, including Muyo-an Inkyoshugyo 10. She also held Premium Night at Billboard Live Yokohama in 2026.
