Robia Scott was born on 7 July 1970 in Queens, New York, and named after her father, Robert LaMorte. She grew up in several places, including the Florida Keys and Ocean City, Maryland, before moving with her family to Los Angeles at age twelve.

Inspired by the film Flashdance, she began studying jazz, ballet, and tap. She attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts as a dance major during its first year and later received a full scholarship to the Dupree Dance Academy in Hollywood.
