Early life and education
Robin Thede was born on July 27, 1979, in Spencer, Iowa. She is the daughter of Dave Thede, a German-American educator, and Phyllis Thede, an African-American community educator and former Iowa state representative. She grew up in Davenport and later Bettendorf, Iowa, alongside her two younger sisters, Acacia and Mackenzie.
Thede attended Davenport North High School before enrolling at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She earned a degree in Broadcast Journalism and African-American Studies. After university, she studied improvisation, sketch comedy and comedy writing at The Second City in Chicago.
Career
Robin Thede began her entertainment career performing sketch comedy and writing for television. She became a writer and performer on The Message before moving into projects such as In the Flow with Affion Crockett, Real Husbands of Hollywood and The Queen Latifah Show.
In 2015, she became head writer and correspondent on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, making her the first African-American woman to hold a head-writer position on a late-night talk show.
She later created and hosted BET’s The Rundown with Robin Thede from 2017 to 2018. In 2019, she created, wrote, produced and starred in HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, which earned multiple Primetime Emmy nominations.
