Ruth Madoc was a British actress with a career on stage and screen for over 60 years. She was best known for her role as Gladys Pugh in the BBC television comedy Hi-de-Hi! (1980–1988), for which she received a BAFTA TV award nomination for Best Light Entertainment Performance.

Ruth Madoc was born Margaret Ruth Llewellyn Baker on April 16, 1943, in Norwich, England, and was 79 years old at the time of her death.

Her parents were George Baker and Iris Williams, who worked in healthcare. They ran a “poor law” institution for people with severe learning difficulties. Madoc had two younger siblings: a sister named Gwen and a brother named David.

Madoc attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, where she graduated in 1964. After graduating from RADA, Madoc began her acting career in the theater.

She appeared in several stage productions, including “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Under Milk Wood,” and “The Prince and the Pauper“.

Personal Life

Ruth Madoc was married twice, first to actor Philip Madoc, with whom she appeared in the 1981 TV serial The Life and Times of David Lloyd George. They had two children together, Rhys and Lowri, and were married for 20 years before divorcing in 1981.

In 1982, Madoc married her second husband, John Jackson, with whom she bought a home in Glynneath in 2002. They were married until his death in September 2021.

In December 2022, Madoc was set to appear in the pantomime Aladdin at the Princess Theatre in Torquay. However, she suffered a fall earlier in the week and could not appear in the production. She underwent surgery but died the following day, December 9, 2022, at 79.


Madoc’s career on television began in the early 1970s. She appeared in several television series, including “The Life and Times of David Lloyd George,” “The Duchess of Duke Street,” and “The Darling Buds of May”.  However, her role as Gladys Pugh in the BBC television comedy Hi-de-Hi! Brought her the most fame.

She starred in Hi-de-Hi! for eight seasons from 1980 to 1988. Her performance as Gladys Pugh was critically acclaimed, and she received a BAFTA TV award nomination for Best Light Entertainment Performance in 1982.

In addition to her work in television, Madoc also appeared in several films. Her film credits include “Fiddler on the Roof,” “The Prince and the Pauper“, and “The Dressmaker“. Madoc also had a successful career in the theater and appeared in several stage productions.
