Early Life & Education

Samantha Ruth Prabhu was born on April 28, 1987, in Alappuzha, Kerala, to Joseph Prabhu, a Telugu father, and Ninette Prabhu, a Malayali mother. She was raised as the family’s youngest child in Pallavaram, Tamil Nadu, with two elder brothers: Jonathan Prabhu and David Prabhu.

Despite her cross upbringing, she identifies as a Tamilian. She received her education at Holy Angels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School and then went to Stella Maris College in Chennai to earn a degree in commerce. 

Samantha Ruth Prabhu began modeling near the end of her undergraduate degree, most notably with Naidu Hall, through which filmmaker Ravi Varman discovered her.

Personal Life

After participating in the film Ye Maaya Chesave in 2010, Samantha Ruth Prabhu began dating actor Naga Chaitanya. On January 29, 2017, the couple married in a Hyderabad ceremony.

Akkineni, her marital name, was then adopted. She dropped her surname “Akkineni” from her social media handles on July 31, 2021, sparking rumors of her breakup with Naga Chaitanya. They announced their separation and eventual divorce on October 2, 2021.

Career

Samantha Ruth Prabhu debuted in the Telugu film titled Ye Maaya Chesave, directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon (2010). The film, which was also released in Tamil as Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010), generated a lot of buzz before its release owing to Gautham Vasudev Menon‘s debut collaboration with composer A. R. Rahman. 

The actress was cast in the film after a successful audition in mid-August 2009, and she worked on it in India and the United States before its release on February 26, 2010.

After the film’s release, Samantha Ruth Prabhu said that Gautham Vasudev Menon was “pivotal” in shaping her career as an actress, teaching her how to stay genuine and at ease in front of the camera, even if she didn’t have any speech. Samantha Ruth Prabhu played Jessie, a Malayali Saint Thomas Christian girl from Hyderabad who falls in love with a male protagonist.
