She attended Priory School Southsea and began dance training at the age of two and a half at Mary Forrester’s Rainbow School of Dance.

She was of mixed Bangladeshi and British heritage, and her religion is Christianity.
Career
Sophiya Haque began her professional career in the late 1980s as the lead vocalist of the band Akasa, which signed a recording deal with Warner Bros. in 1988.
The group’s single “One Night in My Life,” featuring a video directed by cinematographer Jack Cardiff, brought her early attention and led to opportunities in television.
In 1992 she joined STAR TV in Hong Kong as a presenter and soon became a prominent video jockey for MTV Asia, later moving to Channel V in India, where she hosted shows including Sophiya’s Choice and built a large following across Asia.
Her visibility as a VJ opened doors in Indian cinema. She made her Bollywood debut with a special appearance in Khoobsurat (1999) and went on to feature in films such as Snip! (2000), dance sequences in Alaipayuthey and Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Santosham, Udhaya, The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey (2005), Wanted (2008), and Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors.
Returning to the United Kingdom in 2002, she joined the West End production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bombay Dreams, initially understudying and later taking over the lead role of Rani for its full run.
She continued stage work in The Far Pavilions and Wah! Wah! Girls, and gained wider British recognition as Poppy Morales in Coronation Street (2008–2009).
Later television credits included Fairy Tales and a major role as Senkhara in House of Anubis (2012).
Her final stage appearance was as Sylvia Morgan in Privates on Parade in 2012.
Throughout her career Haque balanced performance across music, television presenting, film, and theatre, leaving a distinctive mark as a versatile artist who bridged British and South Asian entertainment.
Her work as a VJ helped introduce Western pop culture to Asian audiences in the 1990s, while her later stage and screen roles demonstrated range and presence.
Even after her diagnosis she remained committed to performance until illness forced her withdrawal from Privates on Parade, cementing a legacy of energetic and multifaceted contribution to the arts.

The couple lived together in Knaphill, Surrey, and were in the process of building a houseboat at the time of her illness. They had been partners for approximately six years.
