Early Life and Education
Susanne Thorson was born on June 12, 1981, in Stockholm, Sweden, and is 45 years old.
Although she was born in Stockholm, she moved with her family to Umeå at age five before eventually returning to Stockholm.
She grew up with three older siblings, including one sister and two brothers. Her early interests were not initially centered on acting, as she spent much of her younger years in sports and once dreamed of becoming a professional snowboarder.
Her interest eventually shifted toward acting during her teenage years. She decided to pursue formal theatrical training and enrolled at Calle Flygare Teaterskola in Stockholm in 2001.
She completed her studies in 2002, then spent several years working in Swedish theater before moving more regularly into film and television.
Personal Life
Susanne Thorson has largely kept her family life private. She was previously married to Swedish director Alain Darborg.
Their relationship also overlapped with their professional lives, as Darborg directed The Master Plan, in which Thorson played Rocky. They eventually divorced in 2017.
Thorson and Darborg have a daughter named Juno Darborg. Thorson later began dating director Magnus Samuelsson. The couple has been together since around 2017 and has built a family that includes Samuelsson’s two children from an earlier relationship, Moltas and Elna-Li.
In November 2022, Thorson gave birth to her second child with Samuelsson, a son. She announced the birth publicly and described the experience as happy, but chose not to disclose the boy’s full name.
At the time, she balanced motherhood with producing Leva Life, her first major television directing assignment.
She explained that becoming a mother for the second time felt different because she already had experience raising her daughter and was also part of a blended family.
Career
Susanne Thorson began her professional career in Swedish theater after graduating from Calle Flygare Teaterskola in 2002. She spent several years performing on stage before gradually moving into film and television. From 2007 onward, she began appearing in Swedish television productions, including Beck and other crime and drama series.
Her early screen work included appearances in productions such as Beck, Der Kommissar und das Meer, Oskyldigt dömd, Playa del Sol, and other Swedish television projects. She also appeared in the 2010 films Puss and Simple Simon.
In Simple Simon, she played Jonna alongside Bill Skarsgård and Martin Wallström. The film was selected as Sweden’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 2010 Academy Awards.
Thorson gained significant public recognition with Once Upon a Time in Phuket, the 2011 Swedish comedy directed by Staffan Lindberg.
She played Anja in the film, alongside Peter Magnusson and Jenny Skavlan. The role became one of the early screen performances most closely associated with her career.
She continued working across Swedish film and television before taking on one of her most recognizable roles in The Master Plan, known in Swedish as Jönssonligan – Den perfekta stöten.
Released in 2015, the film revived the popular Jönssonligan franchise with a new cast. Thorson played Rocky, a skilled safecracker who joined Charles-Ingvar Jönsson’s criminal team. Sveriges Radio reported that the character was a modernized version of Rocky from the earlier films, and Thorson’s version also took on many of the safecracking skills traditionally associated with Sickan.
The role brought Thorson considerable attention, and contemporary Swedish coverage highlighted her as a central member of the new Jönssonligan cast. SVT also identified her performance as Rocky as a notable element of the 2015 revival.
Following The Master Plan, Thorson remained active in Swedish television and film. Her credits include Gåsmamman, Alex, Solsidan, Upp i det blå, De dagar som blommorna blommar, Katsching!, Sommaren med Släkten and the children’s series Trex. She also appeared in films such as Off Track, continuing to work in comedy, drama and family entertainment.
Thorson later expanded her career into directing. Her transition behind the camera became particularly important in 2023 when she made her television directing debut with Leva Life.
She served as both creator and director of the Viaplay series, which follows a young woman dealing with cancer and the changes that follow the diagnosis.
The production marked a significant new stage in Thorson’s career, as she moved from primarily an on-screen performer to taking creative direction of a television series.
Net Worth
Susanne Thorson has an estimated net worth of $1.5 million.
Her income has been built through her long-running career in Swedish film, television, and theater, as well as her later work as a television director.
