Verónica Echegaray was born on 16 June 1983 in Madrid, Spain, to Mr. and Mrs. Echegaray.

Her father is a lawyer, and her mother is a civil servant; she is also a relative of the Spanish Nobel laureate José Echegaray.

She took entrance exams for the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramatico in Spain. She later moved to London to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), working as a waitress to support herself during her studies.

Career

Echegui landed her first television work with minor roles in the series Una nueva vida and Paco y Veva before making her feature film debut as the title character in Bigas Luna’s 2006 drama My Name Is Juani.

She soon followed this with a leading role in the prison drama My Prison Yard (2008), which garnered her a Goya nomination for Best Actress.

Echegui’s career grew to include international projects; she co-starred in the British comedy Bunny and the Bull (2009) and the action thriller The Cold Light of Day (2012).

She received further critical acclaim and Goya nominations for Kathmandu Lullaby (2012) and the musical comedy My Heart Goes Boom! (2020). Her television work included a recurring role on the Sky Atlantic series Fortitude (2015–2017) and the FX miniseries Trust (2018).

In 2021, she made her directorial debut with the short film Tótem Loba, which won the Goya Award for Best Fictional Short Film the following year.
