Vivian Liberto Distin, also known as Vivian Cash, was born in San Antonio, Texas, United States, on April 23, 1934. Her mother was called Irene Robinson, and she worked as a homemaker, while her father named, Thomas Liberto, was an insurance salesman and amateur magician

Vivian Cash was raised alongside her brother named, Raymond Alvin Liberto, and a sister named, Sylvia Liberto. 

Her paternal ancestors moved to the United States from Cefalù, Palermo, Sicily, and her father is of Sicilian descent. Vivian Cash‘s mother is of Irish, German, and African-American descent.

Johnny Cash, her first husband, met Vivian Cash at the age of 17 in a roller skating rink in San Antonio, Texas, on July 18, 1951, while in Air Force basic training.
