Yara Sayeh Shahidi was born on 10 February 2000 in Minneapolis, the largest city in Minnesota, in Hennepin County, United States.

She is the daughter of Afshin Shahidi (father) and Keri Salter Shahidi (mother).

Her mother, Keri Shahidi, is of mixed African American and Choctaw Indian ancestry, whereas her father Afshin Shahidi is Iranian.
