Zhou Xun is a Chinese actress and singer who was born on 18 October 1974 in Quzhou, Zhejiang, China, to a middle-class family. Her father, Zhou Tianyu, was a film projectionist, while her mother, Chen Yiqin, worked at a department store as a salesperson. 

Zhou Xun attended Quzhou No.1 Middle School but decided to follow her passion for dramatic arts by enrolling at the Zhejiang Arts Institute despite her parents’ wish to complete her tertiary education.

Her love for acting took root during her teenage years when she was picked to feature in the film Strange Tales Amongst Old and Desolate Tombs. Her talent was evident, and she quickly gained popularity for her impressive acting chops.
