Jang Joon-hwan was born on January 18, 1970, in Jeonju, North Jeolla, South Korea. He graduated from Sungkyunkwan University, where he studied English Literature, and later attended the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA).
Career
Jang Joon-hwan began his directing career in 1994 after completing the short film 2001 Imagine.
He later collaborated on the screenplay for Phantom: The Submarine before making his feature-film debut with Save the Green Planet! in 2003.
The film received international acclaim and earned him the Best Director award at the Busan Film Critics Awards and the Special Silver St. George for Best Director at the Moscow International Film Festival.
He returned to feature filmmaking with Hwayi: A Monster Boy in 2013, followed by the critically acclaimed historical drama 1987: When the Day Comes in 2017, which won several major Korean film awards.
