Sebastián Lelio was born on 8 March 1974 in Mendoza, Argentina, to Mr. Lelio an Argentine father and his Chilean mother, Valeria, a ballet dancer.
He has seven half-siblings and moved with his mother to Viña del Mar, Chile, when he was two years old following his parents’ separation.
He spent his childhood moving between different parts of Chile and North America, including Concepción and Cholguán.
After studying journalism for one year at Andrés Bello University, he studied at the film school of Universidad ARCIS before entering the Escuela de Cine de Chile, from which he graduated.

Career
Sebastián Lelio began making short films and music videos in the 1990s before directing his first feature, La Sagrada Familia, in 2005.

He followed it with Navidad in 2009 and The Year of the Tiger in 2011, establishing himself within Chilean independent cinema.
