Early life and education

Sukumar was born on January 11, 1970, in Mattaparru, Andhra Pradesh, to Tirupathi Rao Naidu and Veera Veni. His father worked as a rice trader and his mother was a homemaker.

He grew up as the youngest of 6 children, including Vijaya Prasad Bandreddi and Ashok Bandreddi.

He studied at Zilla Parishad High School in Razole and earned a master’s degree in Mathematics.

Career

Sukumar began his professional life as a mathematics and physics lecturer at a junior college in Kakinada, before deciding to pursue filmmaking.

After moving to Hyderabad, he entered the film industry as a writer and assistant director, working on projects including Manasichi Choodu and assisting V. V. Vinayak on Dil.

Sukumar made his directorial debut in 2004 with Arya, starring Allu Arjun. The film became a major success and earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Telugu and the Nandi Award for Best Screenplay Writer.

He subsequently directed Jagadam, Arya 2, 100% Love, 1: Nenokkadine, and Nannaku Prematho. In 2015, he expanded into production under Sukumar Writings through Kumari 21F.

His career reached another major stage through Rangasthalam in 2018, followed by Pushpa: The Rise in 2021 and Pushpa 2: The Rule in 2024. Pushpa 2 became one of the biggest commercial successes of Indian cinema.

In 2026, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Telugu for Pushpa 2, while the film also earned him the National Film Award for Best Screenplay (Original).
