Anurag Basu, now 55 years, was born on 8 May 1970 into an upper‑middle‑class Bengali Hindu family in Bhilai (then Madhya Pradesh, now Chhattisgarh).

His parents, Subrato Bose and Deepshikha Bose, worked as executives at the Bhilai Steel Plant and in the education department respectively, and were both award‑winning theatre artists—an environment that immersed him in storytelling from an early age.

He attended BSP Senior Secondary School, Sector IV, Bhilai, and later earned a Bachelor of Science (Physics honours) from the University of Mumbai, initially intending to study cinematography at FTII, Pune, before moving directly into film and television.
