Early life and education
Brian K. Vaughan was born on July 17, 1976, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Geoffrey and Catherine Vaughan. He grew up in Rocky River and Westlake, Ohio, where he developed an early passion for comic books. His ethnicity is White American.
Vaughan has one older brother, and the brothers shared a strong interest in the work of comic-book writer Peter David, particularly his long run on The Incredible Hulk.
Brian K. Vaughan attended St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland and graduated in 1994. He later studied film at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. While at NYU, he participated in Marvel Comics’ Stan-hattan Project, a program for aspiring comic-book writers.

Brian K. Vaughan received his first professional comic-book credit with Marvel Comics’ Tales from the Age of Apocalypse #2 in 1996.
He went on to write for major Marvel characters including the X-Men, Spider-Man, and Captain America, as well as DC characters such as Batman and Green Lantern. His creator-owned work brought him greater recognition, particularly Y: The Last Man, Runaways, and Ex Machina.
He later co-created Pride of Baghdad, Saga with Fiona Staples, and Paper Girls with Cliff Chiang. Vaughan also moved successfully into television, joining Lost as a writer, story editor, and producer during its third through fifth seasons. He later created and served as an executive producer on Under the Dome. His work has earned numerous Eisner and Harvey Awards as well as two Hugo Awards.
