Career
Dawn O’Porter began her television career behind the camera, gaining production experience before moving in front of it. She first attracted major attention through the BBC Three documentary Super Slim Me, in which she explored extreme dieting while attempting to reach a size-zero figure. The programme established her as a distinctive television presenter willing to investigate personal and controversial subjects.
She subsequently presented How to Look Good Naked and developed the BBC Three documentary series Dawn…, exploring subjects including nudity, lesbianism, dating and pregnancy.
Her 2008 Channel 4 series Extreme Wife took her to different parts of the world to examine relationships, marriage and unconventional forms of family life. She later presented My Breasts Could Kill Me, a documentary inspired partly by her family’s history of breast cancer.
O’Porter continued appearing on television in programmes including Balls of Steel, Derren Brown: The Experiments and Skins. In 2014, she hosted and co-produced This Old Thing, a Channel 4 series focused on vintage fashion. She also developed her own production company, Hot Patootie TV, and expanded into podcasting, journalism, fashion and charity work.
Her writing career became increasingly successful after the publication of Paper Aeroplanes in 2013. She followed it by Goose, The Cows, So Lucky, Life in Pieces, Cat Lady and Honeybee.
Her books have made her a bestselling author, and her work often explores friendship, relationships, women’s lives, family and identity. Her 2026 memoir Hungry Eyes continues her work as an author and reflects on food, family, ambition and her relationship with eating.
O’Porter has also remained active in podcasting and fashion. Her podcast Get It On explores people’s relationships to clothing and personal style, while her fashion interests have led to collaborations and clothing projects.
She was also a founding member of Help Refugees, now known as Choose Love, supporting humanitarian work for displaced people.
