John Hamburg was born on 26 May 1970 in Manhattan, New York, to parents Joan Hamburg, a well-known New York City radio personality, and Morton I. Hamburg. He has one sister, Liz.

Raised in a Jewish family in New York City, he began making short films while still in high school. He graduated from Brown University in 1992 with a degree in history and later attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where he continued developing his filmmaking skills.

Career

John Hamburg’s professional breakthrough came after his short film Tick screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 1996. He made his feature debut as writer-director of the independent comedy Safe Men (1998).

Greater commercial success followed when he co-wrote Meet the Parents (2000) and Zoolander (2001). He returned to directing with Along Came Polly (2004), which he also wrote, and continued the Parents franchise by co-writing Meet the Fockers (2004) and Little Fockers (2010).

In subsequent years he wrote and directed the buddy comedy I Love You, Man (2009), co-wrote Zoolander 2 (2016), and directed Why Him? (2016).

Later credits include co-writing Night School (2018) and writing, directing, and producing the Netflix comedy Me Time (2022). He has also directed television episodes for series such as Undeclared, New Girl, The Unicorn, and Stick (2025).

Hamburg is attached as writer, director, and producer of the upcoming Focker-in-Law (2026), continuing the long-running franchise.
