Lesley Arfin was born on March 8, 1979, in New York City and grew up in Woodbury, Nassau County, Long Island, New York.
She was raised in a Jewish family and attended Syosset High School, where she was friends with future writer Gabe Rotter.
Arfin later attended Hampshire College. Her early interests in writing and popular culture eventually led her toward magazine journalism and creative writing.

Lesley Arfin began contributing to Vice in 2001, developing a distinctive writing style that later became the basis for her book Dear Diary, published in 2007. She subsequently became editor-in-chief of Missbehave magazine in 2008.
