Miranda July was born on February 15, 1974, in Barre, Vermont, USA.
Richard Grossinger and Lindy Hough, both writers and publishers who taught at Goddard College and later founded North Atlantic Books, raised her.
Her family moved to Berkeley, California, where she spent her formative years. She is White and grew up with her older brother, Robin Grossinger.
July attended The College Preparatory School in Oakland and later studied film at the University of California, Santa Cruz, leaving after her second year to pursue her artistic career in Portland, Oregon.

Miranda July began creating art as a teenager, writing plays and producing a girlzine called Snarla.
After moving to Portland, she became involved in the underground performance and riot grrrl scenes, developing one-woman performances, short films, music projects, and experimental media.
She created the participatory web project Learning to Love You More alongside Harrell Fletcher and later expanded her practice into feature filmmaking.
Her directorial debut, Me and You and Everyone We Know, premiered in 2005 and received the Caméra d’Or at Cannes and a Sundance Special Jury Prize. She followed it with The Future, which she wrote, directed, and starred in, then directed Kajillionaire. Her literary career includes No One Belongs Here More Than You, The First Bad Man, and the bestselling novel All Fours.
Her recent artistic work includes the participatory project F.A.M.I.L.Y. and a 2024 solo exhibition at Fondazione Prada.
