After signing with Righteous Babe Records, she released Hymns for the Exiled in 2004 and The Brightness in 2007. These early recordings made her narrative songwriting style and interest in folk traditions increasingly prominent.

Her career changed significantly with Hadestown. Mitchell originally developed the project as a folk opera inspired by the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, releasing a concept album in 2010.

She continued developing the material for the stage for more than a decade, eventually working with director Rachel Chavkin. Hadestown received an Off-Broadway production in 2016, moved to London’s National Theatre in 2018, and opened on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre in April 2019.

In 2013, she collaborated with Jefferson Hamer on Child Ballads, a collection based on traditional English and Scottish ballads compiled by Francis James Child. Their recording of “Willie of Winsbury” won the 2014 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Traditional Track.

In 2020, Mitchell joined Bonny Light Horseman alongside Eric D. Johnson and Josh Kaufman. The group’s self-titled debut album was followed by Rolling Golden Holy in 2022 and Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free in 2024. She returned to solo recording in 2022 with the self-titled Anaïs Mitchell.
