Dheekshitha Venkadeshan (born June 26, 1998), popularly known and addressed as Dhee, is a Sri Lankan-born singer of Australian nationality.

She was given some verses in her step-father Santhosh Narayanan‘s albums. 

Dhee has once been nominated at the Filmfare Awards for Best Singer. She is known for her distinctive alto voice.

Early Life & Education

Dheekshitha Venkadeshan, popularly known as Dhee, was born on 26 June 1998 to a Sri Lankan-Tamil father named Venkadesan, who hails from Jaffna.

Her mother, named Meenakshi Iyer, is a Carnatic musician. She was raised and received her education in Sydney, Australia. She has an elder brother named Sudheekshanan. 

Dhee is also a stepdaughter of a popular Indian music composer named Santhosh Narayanan. She began her playback singing career by performing songs on two of Santhosh Narayanan‘s albums. The first song was titled Pizza II: Villa; Dhee reportedly performed the song in 2013. 

And in 2014, Dhee performed the second track titled Cuckoo. During this period, she decided to take a break from her education. In 2014, she got a breakthrough by singing Naan Nee from Pa. Ranjith‘s Madras alongside Shakthisree Gopalan.

Career

Dhee received critical feedback for her work in Sudha Kongara Prasad‘s sports drama film, Irudhi Suttru, which premiered in the year 2016. 

Afterward, she recorded two solo tracks titled Ey Sandakaara and Usuru Narumbuley. Behindwoods, after reviewing the song, stated that the first song was “another classic Santhosh number that gets your attention in no time.”

After that, Dhee had the opportunity to collaborate with Santhosh Narayanan on Kaala, one of his album tracks published in 2018. Another song, Vada Chennai, followed the song and was also released in 2018.

Shortly after, she collaborated with Yuvan Shankar Raja for the song Rowdy Baby in Maari 2, which was also released in 2018. 

Dhee made an official debut as a pop singer under the A.R. Rahman-helmed record label Maajja. Shortly after joining the record label, she released the song titled Enjoy Enjaami featuring Arivu. The song was released on 7 March 2021.

The song was reportedly produced by her stepfather, Santhosh Narayanan. Arivu penned the lyrics. The song was an instant hit, with the music video gaining over 398 million views and more than 4.6 million likes (as of March 2022) since it premiered on YouTube. 

Enjoy Enjaami is the first song to be released under Maajja. Dhee also previously released her debut studio album under the Maajja label.

The album was released towards the end of 2021. The album is largely made up of contemporary jazz songs. It will also mark her first English language release since debuting in the (Indian) music industry.
